John Hadley

After growing up in Switzerland and studying art, I pursued a degree in Architecture in Los Angeles, where I’ve practiced ever since. At 70, my wife gifted me a rowing scull, and at 75, my children gave me painting lessons, reigniting my passion for the outdoors and creativity. Nature’s elements inspire my work, blending architecture with my love for the beach and mountains. Five years ago, I became a full-time resident of Camano Island, where I now row and paint daily, connecting with the natural world and recording my experiences. Painting, unlike architecture with its boundaries, offers me boundless freedom of expression. I approach both architecture and painting with careful thought, visualization, and the belief that making mistakes is essential to learning. Reflecting on my journey, I’m grateful for how my childhood experiences have made aging a fulfilling adventure.
